It's likely that you've always enjoyed practical work - the 'hands-on' person. Typically, the world of book-reading and classrooms can be just about bared when essential, but it's not ideal. Check out video-based multimedia instruction if you'd really rather not use books. Many studies have proved that much more of what we learn in remembered when we use all our senses, and we take action to use what we've learned.

You can now study via interactive CD and DVD ROM's. Through instructor-led video classes you'll learn your subject by way of the expert demonstrations. You can then test yourself by practicing and interacting with the software. You must ensure that you see courseware examples from the company you're considering. It's essential they incorporate instructor-led video demonstrations with virtual practice-lab's.

Avoiding training that is delivered purely online is generally a good idea. Ideally, you should opt for CD and DVD ROM courseware where available, enabling them to be used at your convenience - and not be totally reliant on your internet connection always being 'up' and available.

A service offered by some training providers is job placement assistance. This is designed to help you find your first job in the industry. Because of the growing shortage of skills in Britain today, it's not necessary to place too much emphasis on this feature however. It's actually not as hard as some people make out to find employment as long as you've got the necessary skills and qualifications.

One important thing though, don't leave it until you have finished your training before polishing up your CV. The day you start training, enter details of your study programme and tell people about it! You may not have got to the stage where you've got to the exam time when you will be offered your first junior support job; yet this won't be the case unless your CV is with employers. If you don't want to travel too far to work, then it's quite likely that a local (but specialised) recruitment consultancy could work much better for you than the trainer's recruitment division, because they're far more likely to know the local job scene.

Just be sure that you don't conscientiously work through your course materials, then call a halt and expect somebody else to find you a job. Get off your backside and make your own enquiries. Invest as much time and energy into securing the right position as it took to get qualified.

You should remember: the actual training program or a certification isn't the end-goal; a job that you want is. A lot of colleges seem to completely prioritise the qualification itself. You could be training for only a year and end up doing the job for 20 years. Avoid the mistake of choosing what sounds like a program of interest to you only to spend 20 years doing a job you hate!

You'll want to understand what expectations industry may have of you. What certifications they'll want you to gain and how you'll build your experience level. It's definitely worth spending time considering how far you wish to go as it will affect your choice of accreditations. As a precursor to beginning a particular training course, it makes sense to discuss specific job needs with an experienced industry professional, in order to be sure the learning program covers all that is required.
